A Single Grain of Rice

When I lived in Japan, my homestay family taught me not to leave a single grain of rice in my rice bowl. You had to eat every last one, otherwise it was disrespectful and wasteful.

It took me some time before I was able to get every last grain of rice with my chopsticks. Now when I clean out our rice maker and dump perfectly good rice into the trash, I think about the energy that went into creating each grain of rice.

The planting, sunlight, water, harvesting, processing, packaging, and transport. All of that energy has been wasted. And it feels like disrespect for life. Like flipping the bird to the universe and all that went into the creation of that grain of rice.

The energy that it takes to create one grain of rice is monumental. Don’t ignore the energy that went into creating this moment and all the things that are in it. Staying present is the only way to ensure that we don’t disregard all of the energy and cosmic forces that brought all that is here with us now into being.
