Honne vs Tatemae - take 2

Last week I talked about Honne and Tatemae

And in an earlier newsletter, I spoke about the stories that we tell ourselves.

So here is the same history, told differently.

There was a young woman who pursued adventure.

Who sought out experiences that were going to push her, challenge her, and teach her something new

honoring a deep internal drive to explore

one that she inherited from her ancestors who came to this country generations ago.

The lessons and perspectives she gained through these adventures were incalculable.

  • Kindness: In Singapore, she met Mathew in a shopping mall and celebrated Christmas day with him and his family.

  • Trust: Dunichand, an Indian driver, refused to take two women in their 20s straight out of college to a restaurant they had been invited to that was run by a local gang.

  • Surrender: The night in Beijing when she rode home alone in a taxi, waking up only as the driver pulled up to her hotel.

  • Faith: Landing on the beach in Thailand at night where there were no streetlights, no taxis, and no plan to get to her hotel.

  • Intuition: The night she got into a tuk-tuk in India alone but realized soon that the driver continued to pick up passengers – all men – along the way. Getting out on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere, after one of them asked “where is your husband?”

There were the countless situations where she was a hair’s breadth away from danger

and yet somehow she came to no harm.

Maybe “honne” for her is really all about adventure, exploration and the high that comes from taking on new things.

Same story, different take.

And the funny thing is, my tatemae or face I show the world, did change in all of these circumstances.

It’s how I was able to navigate them so well.

There is a season in life for everything, as they say.

And one day I will travel again.

But my season now is to ensure that my boys have a stable home and

Will one day be able to explore this world in their own way

with a life of their choosing

just as I have been able to.
